Bond University - Abedian School of Architecture

Continuing ADCO's long standing relationship with Bond University is the completion of the most challenging capital works project undertaken on their Gold Coast campus, the Abedian School of Architecture.

The world class facility was designed by architect Sir Peter Cook, of London's Cook Robotham Architecture Bureau (CRAB Studio). CRAB Studio won the design task in January 2011 following a successful two-stage international competition to select an architect. CRAB was then novated to ADCO as design and construction manager for the project.

Translating the complex design into reality presented many challenges for the delivery team. This was particularly evident in the form work component, particularly the design and construction of the four 10-14 metre off-form concrete "scoops". These "scoops" provide the essential structural supports for the stairways and main roof, whilst also permitting light and air into the building. They provide a visually stunning and functional interior by dividing the building into its dedicated studios and work spaces.

All aspects of the 2500m2 building were constructed on site, with due care taken to avoid interrupting the university's day-to-day operations and students' study and movements.

Green Star initiatives have been included in the build, including water and energy efficient fixtures and fittings such as; LED light fittings timed and incorporating motion sensors, solar efficient glazing to minimise air-conditioning costs and a building design that takes advantage of natural light.

The complex formed concrete scoop structures, bespoke window and glazing systems are Australian construction firsts.

The project has already won wide spread industry recognition and awards across multiple fields.  These include:
